Day 2 — Addis Ababa to Awash
Drive into the Rift Valley, stopping at Debre Zeyit for waterbirds, before reaching Awash for dry-country birding.

Day 3 — Awash National Park
A full day in Awash, searching for the localised Sombre Rock Chat at Lake Baseka and dry-country specials including the Arabian Bustard.

Day 4 — Awash to Wondo Genet
Drive south past the Rift Valley lakes to Wondo Genet, with evening birding in forest patches near the lodge.

Day 5 — Wondo Genet to Bale Mountains
Morning birding for endemics including the Yellow-fronted Parrot and White-cheeked Turaco, then continue into the Bale Mountains.

Day 6 — Bale Mountains National Park
A full day in the alpine moorlands and Hagenia forests, searching for the Rouget's Rail, Blue-winged Goose, and White-collared Pigeon.

Day 7 — Searching for the Ethiopian Wolf
A dedicated day searching the Bale Mountains for the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, of which only 400-600 remain.

Day 8 — Bale Mountains to Wondo Genet
Drive across the Sanetti Plateau and through the Harenna Forest, watching river crossings for Prince Ruspoli's Turaco, before returning toward Wondo Genet.

Day 9 — Wondo Genet area birding
A dedicated birding day around Wondo Genet's forest patches and hot springs, searching for regional specialities.

Day 10 — Awassa to Langano
Birding stops at Koka Dam and Lake Ziway, with huge numbers of waterbirds including African Pygmy Geese and Fish Eagles, before reaching Lake Langano.

Day 11 — Langano to Debre Libanos
Continue north to the cliffs of Debre Libanos, searching for the localised Erckel's Francolin and White-winged Cliff Chat.

Day 12 — Debre Libanos, the Jemma Valley, and Ankober
Descend into the Jemma River valley at first light for the rare Harwood's Francolin, then continue to the escarpment at Ankober.

Day 13 — Ankober to Addis Ababa
Search for the endemic Ankober Serin, with a possible detour to Melka Ghebdu for the localised Yellow-throated Serin.

Day 14 — Gibe Gorge day trip
A day exploring Gibe Gorge, west of Addis Ababa, known for raptors and forest species.

Some regions elsewhere in the country carry travel advisories; our guides and drivers know exactly where to go and where to avoid, and this itinerary is built entirely around routes we consider safe to run.
Do I need a visa to visit Ethiopia?
Most nationalities can apply for an Ethiopian e-Visa online before travel, or a visa on arrival at Bole International Airport. We recommend applying for the e-Visa in advance to avoid queues on arrival.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Light to moderate. Mostly vehicle-based birding with short walks; the Ethiopian Wolf search in Bale involves some walking at high altitude.
Do I need my own binoculars?
Yes, please bring your own — a spotting scope is provided by your guide for the group to share.
What's the best time of year for this tour?
October through April offers the best overall birding conditions and coincides with a wider range of migrant species.

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ethiopia. The Ethiopian e-Visa is available online before travel and is the most straightforward option. How physically demanding is this tour?
This tour includes trekking at Erta Ale - a two to three hour walk on uneven terrain - and multi-day trekking in the Simien Mountains at altitudes above 3,000 metres. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. You do not need prior trekking experience but should be comfortable walking for several hours on varied terrain. Please let us know of any health conditions when inquiring.
Is the Danakil Depression safe to visit?
The Danakil Depression requires armed scouts as a standard precaution - this applies to all tour operators working in the region. We have operated safely in the Danakil for many years and work exclusively with trusted local partners. We monitor conditions continuously and will always communicate any changes that affect the itinerary.
What altitude does this tour reach?
This tour covers an extraordinary range - from the Danakil Depression at 116 metres below sea level, the lowest point in Africa, to the Simien Mountains above 4,000 metres. We acclimatise gradually throughout the itinerary and your guide monitors the group's wellbeing throughout the trekking sections.
Can I do this tour without the Danakil Depression section?
