What makes Aksum unique
Aksum doesn't just claim ancient history — it claims to be the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant itself, watched over by a single monk inside the Church of St Mary of Zion. Just beyond the city, the Gheralta Mountains hide one of Ethiopia's most extraordinary sights: rock churches carved directly into sheer cliff faces, some reachable only by climbing bare rock or narrow ledges hundreds of metres above the ground. Long before Lalibela's churches were carved, Aksum was already trading with Rome, Persia, and India, and its granite obelisks — some over 20 metres tall, carved from single stones — remain one of Ethiopia's most underrated ancient wonders.
