Gondar earned the nickname "the Camelot of Africa," and walking through the Royal Enclosure makes it obvious why. Six castles, each built by a different emperor across generations, sit within a single walled compound, layering centuries of royal history into one site. A short walk away, Debre Birhan Selassie Church hides one of Ethiopia's most striking interiors — a ceiling completely covered in painted angel faces, each one looking down at visitors below. Each January, the city transforms entirely for Timket, when thousands gather at Fasilides Bath for one of Ethiopia's most spectacular religious festivals.
