Yangudi Rassa National Park
Exploring the Desert Ecosystems of Yangudi Rassa
Yangudi Rassa National Park
Located in the northeastern Afar Region, Yangudi Rassa National Park was created to secure a protected desert ecosystem for the African Wild Ass, as well as for its significant geological and archaeological features. Situated in the Rift Valley, the park's arid landscape consists of semi-desert trees, succulent scrub, grasslands, and acacia woodlands. It is a vital refuge for desert-adapted wildlife, including the Wild Ass, Soemmerring’s Gazelle, Hamadryas Baboon, Gerenuk, and Grevy's Zebra. The park's major physical features include the Awash River, active volcanoes, extensive arid desert ecosystems, and nearby alkaline lakes. Its location also makes it an important stopover for Palearctic and Intra-Africa migratory birds, making it a place of great conservation significance.
