Thirteen days, four UNESCO World Heritage sites, and one of the widest ranges of landscape you'll find on a single Ethiopia itinerary.
You'll begin in the Danakil — trekking to the active lava lake at Erta Ale and the sulphur fields of Dallol — before flying north to Axum, Lalibela, the Simien Mountains, and Gondar.
Arrive in Addis Ababa and settle in with a half-day city tour. Visit the National Museum, home to the 3.2-million-year-old fossil "Lucy" and a collection of artefacts tracing Ethiopia's history as the "Cradle of Mankind," then explore Mercato, Africa's largest open-air market. In the afternoon, fly to Mekele, your gateway to the Danakil Depression.
Drive by 4WD across sandy desert tracks via Hamedela, watching the landscape shift from scrubland to bare volcanic rock. In the late afternoon, trek roughly 2-3 hours up the flanks of Erta Ale, one of the few volcanoes on Earth with a permanent lava lake. Reach the crater rim by nightfall to watch the lava glow and churn in the dark. Overnight camping near the crater.
Trek back down from the crater at dawn, before the day's heat sets in, taking in views over the Danakil Depression's cracked salt plains. Continue overland to Hamedela, passing salt caravans and small Afar settlements along the way.
Visit Dallol's surreal sulphur-and-salt landscape, where phosphorus, sulphur, and mineral deposits paint the ground in vivid colours. Watch the camel caravans that still carry salt blocks out of the depression by hand. Continue on to Hawzien, leaving the desert behind for the Tigray highlands.
Drive to Axum, stopping en route at the pre-Christian Yeha temple, dating to the 5th century BC. An optional detour to the cliff-top Debre Damo monastery is available, accessible only by a rope climb and open to men only. Arrive in Axum by evening.
Fly to Lalibela and spend two full days exploring its eleven rock-hewn churches, carved directly into volcanic rock roughly 800 years ago. Highlights include Bet Giyorgis, carved in the shape of a Greek cross, plus the north-western cluster of Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, and Bet Golgotha. A half-day excursion to the cliffside church of Yemrehane Kristos and a traditional coffee ceremony round out your time here.
Fly to Gondar and drive directly into Simien Mountains National Park. Trek roughly four hours to the Sankaber campsite, watching for Gelada baboons and, with luck, the endangered Walia ibex. On Day 9, hike the ridge toward Geech, with views as the Jinbar River drops into the Geech Abyss below.
Return to Gondar and spend the afternoon exploring its 17th-century Royal Enclosure. Visit Fasilidas' Castle and the Debre Birhan Selassie church, famed for its ceiling of painted angel faces. In the evening, enjoy a performance of Eskesta, the traditional shoulder-dance Gondar is known for.
Cross Lake Tana by boat, stopping at the island monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret. Visit the Blue Nile Falls, known locally as "Tis Isat," before settling into Bahir Dar for two nights of gentler pace.
Fly back to Addis Ababa for a final half-day of sightseeing, including panoramic views from Mount Entoto. Enjoy a farewell dinner before transferring to the airport for your onward flight home.

This tour includes trekking at Erta Ale - a two to three hour walk on uneven terrain - and multi-day trekking in the Simien Mountains at altitudes above 3,000 metres. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. You do not need prior trekking experience but should be comfortable walking for several hours on varied terrain.
