This is the only Absolute Ethiopia itinerary that combines the northern historic route with the Bale Mountains — home to the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf — before continuing into the Omo Valley's tribal communities. A genuine combination of Ethiopia's sacred architecture, rarest wildlife, and most distinctive cultures.
After Bahir Dar, the Simien Mountains, and Lalibela, the route turns south to the Sanetti Plateau in search of the Ethiopian Wolf, then continues to the Omo Valley.

Day 2 — Fly to Bahir Dar
Boat across Lake Tana to Ura Kidane Mihret monastery, then visit the Blue Nile Falls.

Day 3-4 — Drive to the Simien Mountains via Gondar
Visit Gondar's Royal Enclosure, then drive into Simien Mountains National Park for two days of trekking around Sankaber and the Geech Abyss.

Day 5 — Drive back to Gondar
Explore Fasilidas' Palace and the painted ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie church.

Day 6 — Fly to Lalibela
Visit the first cluster of rock-hewn churches, including the six churches of the northwestern group.

Day 7 — Explore Lalibela
Visit Yemrehane Kristos in the morning, then the remaining five rock-hewn churches in the afternoon.

Day 8 — Fly to Addis Ababa, drive to Lake Langano
Stop at the archaeological sites of Tiya and Adadi Maryam en route to Langano.

Day 9-10 — Bale Mountains National Park
Drive via Shashamane to Dinsho, then explore the Sanetti Plateau and Harena Forest, searching for the Ethiopian Wolf and its prey, the Giant Mole Rat.

Day 11 — Drive to Hawassa
Relax at a lakeside resort in Hawassa, known as "the town of endless love."

Day 12 — Drive to Arba Minch, Dorze villages
Visit the Dorze beehive houses in the Guge Mountains.

Day 13 — Drive to Turmi via Lake Chamo
Boat trip on Lake Chamo to see the "crocodile market," then continue to Turmi, home of the Hamer, known for traditional Evangadi night dancing.

Day 14 — Drive to Jinka via Dimeka and Key Afer
Visit the colourful Dimeka or Key Afer market, where Hamer, Bena, and Karo communities trade.

Day 15 — Mursi village and fly to Addis Ababa
Visit a Mursi village in Mago National Park before flying back to Addis Ababa for departure.

Is Ethiopia safe for tourists?
Ethiopia is generally safe for visitors, and the vast majority of tourist routes — including every destination on this itinerary — see no disruption. Some regions elsewhere in the country carry travel advisories; our guides and drivers know exactly where to go and where to avoid, and this itinerary is built entirely around routes we consider safe to run.
Do I need a visa to visit Ethiopia?
Most nationalities can apply for an Ethiopian e-Visa online before travel, or a visa on arrival at Bole International Airport. We recommend applying for the e-Visa in advance to avoid queues on arrival.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The Simien Mountains and Bale Mountains sections both involve trekking at altitude; the rest is vehicle-based sightseeing.
What are my chances of seeing the Ethiopian Wolf?
Good, though never guaranteed — the Sanetti Plateau is the most reliable place in the world to see this critically endangered species, with regular sightings during our visits.
Is this tour suitable if I've already done a separate Omo Valley or Simien Mountains trip?
This itinerary is best for travelers who haven't done either yet, since it combines both — for repeat visitors, our standalone Omo Valley or Simien tours may be a better fit.

Do I need a visa to visit Ethiopia?
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ethiopia. The Ethiopian e-Visa is available online before travel and is the most straightforward option. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry. Contact us if you need guidance on the visa process for your specific nationality.
How physically demanding is this tour?
This tour includes trekking at Erta Ale - a two to three hour walk on uneven terrain - and multi-day trekking in the Simien Mountains at altitudes above 3,000 metres. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. You do not need prior trekking experience but should be comfortable walking for several hours on varied terrain. Please let us know of any health conditions when inquiring.
Is the Danakil Depression safe to visit?
The Danakil Depression requires armed scouts as a standard precaution - this applies to all tour operators working in the region. We have operated safely in the Danakil for many years and work exclusively with trusted local partners. We monitor conditions continuously and will always communicate any changes that affect the itinerary.
What altitude does this tour reach?
This tour covers an extraordinary range - from the Danakil Depression at 116 metres below sea level, the lowest point in Africa, to the Simien Mountains above 4,000 metres. We acclimatise gradually throughout the itinerary and your guide monitors the group's wellbeing throughout the trekking sections.
Can I do this tour without the Danakil Depression section?
