Let’s go!
1. Yemrehana Krestos – A Medieval Church Built Inside A Cave!
Located within a remote cave on the slopes of Mount Ababa Yosef, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Lalibela, lies the Yemrehana Krestos Church. This 11th – 12th-century masterpiece even predates the famous Lalibela Churches! Showcasing classic Aksumite architecture, the church is adorned with alternating layers of wood and stone. Inside, the churches’ interior is decorated with beautiful murals – the intricate work of locals from centuries ago! And a slightly creepier fact, behind the church rests a collection of mummified remains – believed to be pilgrims who once sought proximity to the holy church when they died. This makes Yemrehana a site of great cultural significance, providing not only an interesting place to visit but a spiritual one, too. If you’re visiting, make sure to enjoy a scenic trek through the Ethiopian highlands, which provide some of the best views in the country.
2. Debris Libanos Monastery – Discover A Small Piece of The True Cross!
Established in 1284 by Saint Tekle Haymanot, Debris Libanos Monastery stands as a symbol of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. Located northwest of Addis Ababa, the monastery is perched on a terrace overlooking a dramatic gorge – let the views speak for themselves! The site is home to several churches, including one said to house a fragment of the True Cross (believed to be Jesus’ Crucifixion Cross) – and a cave believed to have been the Saint’s hermitage. Both pilgrims and visitors are drawn to the site’s spiritual ambience and its historical significance as a centre for religious and cultural learning.
3. Asheton Maryam Monastery – Ethiopia’s Highest Monastery?
Perched at an elevation exceeding a whopping 3,000 metres on Mount Abuna Yosef, Asheton Maryam Monastery is one of Ethiopia’s highest! It’s carved into the mountain’s rocky facade, offering some incredible panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. If you’re feeling adventurous, the journey to this secluded monastery involves a challenging hike or mule ride – giving you that rewarding sense of accomplishment when you get to visit one of Ethiopia’s most secluded sites.
4. Tomb of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel – Experience the Aksumite Glory Days!
In the ancient city of Aksum lie the rumoured resting places of Kings Kaleb and his son Gebre Meskel – prominent historical figures for Ethiopia – reigning in the 6th century. The King was most notable for his expedition in Yemen, eventually becoming the Conqueror of Yemen. Many visitors come to see the twin tombs today – with a rumour that there is actually a secret tunnel leading from the tombs to the Red Sea! The rock-cut tombs, though modest in appearance, are hugely significant for visitors and scholars alike who have studied the ancient architecture of the Kingdom of Aksum. Exploring these sites provides insight into the kingdom that once reigned as a major trading empire.
5. Erta Ale – The Smoking Mountain
For those drawn to the raw power of nature, the Erta Ale volcano in the Danakil Depression is a must-visit. Known as the “Smoking Mountain” and often dubbed the “Gateway to Hell,” Erta Ale is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Each year, visitors undergo a thrilling adventure to trek across the barren, otherworldly landscape to witness the molten lava. It’s truly an unusual sight!
6. Ben Abeba: One of Ethiopia’s Most Unique Dining Experiences!
In the vast highlands of Lalibela, Ben Abeba is well-known amongst visitors for its innovative architecture and its fusion-based cuisine. The restaurant, owned by a Scottish-Ethiopian duo, resembles a futuristic flower blooming on top of a hill. With an extensive menu blending both Ethiopian and international dishes, Ben Abeba offers diners 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys and mountains – a true feast for both the palette and the eyes!
7. Manyate Coffee Village
Did you know that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee? Manyate Coffee Village is immersive, giving visitors an insight into all things ‘coffee.’ Situated within a lush cloud forest, the village is part of a conservation project protecting wild Arabica coffee plants. Visitors can engage with local farmers, learn about traditional coffee cultivation methods and enjoy freshly brewed cups amidst the landscape!
8. Lionness of Gobedra – An Ancient Art Mystery!
Just outside of Aksum, the lioness of Gobedra is a fascinating rock engraved with a depiction of a 4m long lion! Its origins and purpose have remained a mystery for centuries, sparking the imagination of those who visit each year. It’s a great spot for those who want to pause on their walk, sit and reflect on the ancient artisans who sat in the same spot all those years ago (the rock is rumoured to be over a thousand years old!). According to the legend, the Archangel Gabriel had flung the beast against the rock during a battle with such force that an imprint was left in its place!
