Danakil Depression

The Danakil Depression is a remote and otherworldly region, home to some of the most surreal landscapes on the planet. Its most famous feature is Dallol, an area subject to the highest average temperatures on Earth, where effervescent colors and surreal formations create a truly alien scene. The Depression is also dominated by Erta Ale, literally “the mountain that smokes.” As one of the world's few constantly active volcanoes, it offers a breathtaking natural spectacle, with its bubbling lava lake best viewed at night. The human element of this harsh environment centers on Ahmed Ela, a vast plane of salt where the Afar people conduct their salt mining, a tradition tied to the endless camel caravans that transport the salt blocks. Adding to the region's unique geography is Lake Afrera, home to Franchetti Island, which is considered the lowest-lying island in the world, making the Danakil a truly exceptional site for any adventure traveler.
