Meskel Festival Tour

Finding Of The True Cross

Ethiopia – Africa’s Hidden Treasure and Meskel Festival for 08 Nights/09 Days

Join us for a memorable experience at the religious festival of Meskel, particularly during the eve celebration known as "Demera." This vibrant event takes place on the 26th of September in the heart of Addis Ababa, specifically at Meskel Square. It commemorates the remarkable discovery of the crucifix of Jesus Christ by Saint Helen.
Legend has it that after the crucifix was buried beneath heaps of rubbish, Saint Helen set fire to a specific area, and the smoke from the flames led her to the exact spot where the crucifix lay hidden. To honor this significant event, followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church gather to light a grand bonfire in the square. At the pinnacle of this bonfire is a cross made from “Adey Abeba,” beautiful yellow seasonal flowers that bloom exclusively during this festive time.
This is more than just a celebration; it's a heartfelt reminder of faith, history, and community. Come join us in this vibrant celebration, where you will experience the rich traditions and the warm spirit of the Ethiopian culture. We can’t wait to see you6 there!

Itinerary

Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa

Welcome to Addis Ababa!
Upon your arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be greeted by the staff of Absolute Ethiopia Tours after you clear immigration and customs. You will then be transported to your hotel.
Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, is located centrally at an elevation of 2100 to 2300 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. The name "Addis Ababa" translates to "new flower" in Amharic. This vibrant city boasts noteworthy museums and is home to "Mercato," one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. Additionally, Addis Ababa serves as the diplomatic hub of Africa, hosting the headquarters for the Organization of African Unity and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Depending on your flight schedule, a sightseeing tour of Addis Ababa can be arranged. This tour will begin with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, which is regarded as one of the most significant museums in sub-Saharan Africa. The museum is home to the 3.5-million-year-old remains of "Lucy," believed to be a common ancestor of humanity. Inside, you will find numerous ancient artifacts that highlight Ethiopia’s status as the "Cradle of Mankind." The historic section of the museum showcases royal attire, weapons, and portraits of wartime heroes and kings.
Next, you will visit the Ethnographic Museum, which consists of two main sections dedicated to local crafts and the diverse regions and peoples of Ethiopia. This museum is an excellent starting point for understanding the country's rich ethnic variety. The impressive collection includes religious crosses, triptychs, murals, and even the bedroom and bathroom of Haile Selassie, Ethiopia’s last Emperor.

The tour will continue to St. George’s Cathedral (Giorgis Cathedral), located at the northern end of Churchill Road. Designed in the traditional octagonal architecture, this cathedral was constructed in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa. It features works by Afewerk Tekle, a distinguished Ethiopian artist famous for the stained-glass windows of the Africa Hall, as well as a small museum within the compound.
After completing your sightseeing, you will return to your hotel for the night.
Overnight accommodation will be at Ramada Addis. [Website: https://www.ramadaaddis.com/]

FAQs

While Ethiopia has faced challenges in recent years due to disruption, conflict, states of emergency, and the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our clients and staff are our top priority. We do not operate tours in areas where there are genuine safety concerns.

Many travel advisories, especially those concerning the Northern part of the country, tend to be overly cautious. We've had numerous clients visit these regions recently and all have experienced smooth and safe trips. Ethiopian Airlines continues to operate multiple daily flights to destinations in the north and northwest, including Lalibela, Bahirdar, Gondar, Mekele, Axum, and Semera, which suggests a stable situation. For the historic route, we facilitate travel by air, with airports conveniently located near towns, rather than long drives. You can find recent client responses regarding their visits to the north here: https://www.tripadvisor.com.ph/Attraction_Review-g293791-d15222383-Reviews-Absolute_Ethiopia_Tours-Addis_Ababa.html
We don't suggest and we are not operating the historic route with long drives connecting cities, instead travel to these regions is facilitated by air with airports conveniently located near the town.
The Southern Rift Valley, including areas around Arba Minch, Konso, Chencha/Dorze Mountains, and Lake Chamo, is also considered very safe and attracts many visitors. Arba Minch has a well-connected airport with regular flights from Addis Ababa.
Overall, Ethiopia, especially the countryside, remains very safe in terms of personal safety, and the honesty of the Ethiopian people is exceptional.
