Few landscapes on earth feel as otherworldly as the Danakil. Standing at the rim of Erta Ale's lava lake after dark, watching molten rock glow against the night sky, is an experience almost nowhere else on the planet can offer. By day, Dallol's sulphur-stained salt flats stretch out in colors that look almost artificial, while camel caravans still haul hand-cut salt blocks across the desert exactly as they have for centuries.
