Ethiopia's rock-hewn wonder — eleven churches carved from solid stone
Lalibela isn't a ruin or a museum — it's a living place of worship. Each of its eleven churches was carved downward into solid volcanic rock nearly 900 years ago, and today the same churches are still in daily use, filled with white-robed priests and centuries-old chant. No photograph fully prepares you for standing inside Bet Giyorgis, looking up at walls that were never built, only carved away.

Christmas, or "Genna," falls on January 7th in Ethiopia. The focal point of this tour is the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebration held in Lalibela at Bete Mariam Church.
